Sketches of Frank Gehry

gehry1.jpg Sketches of Frank Gehry is a movie, or rather documentary that many have been waiting for. Here is an extraordinary approach to capturing the essence of architecture and design in an informal and heart warming way. The story of Frank Gehry, a man driven by imagination and energy rather than rules and conformity, captured by his friend who has absolutely no architectural background. Of course it helps when that friend happens to be Sydney Pollack. Because of the lack of formality the film’s focus is more about the mystery and magic behind the artist rather than architectural theory.

For anyone who has marveled over the Guggenheim at Bilbao, or the plans for the Art Gallery of Ontario ( currently showing there), then this film is not one you should miss. Behind the crazy sketches, dream like buildings and controversial aesthetics, is a shy and quiet man with a ready smile that we all get to see in this documentary. It is filmed in a way only a close friend could do, allowing its viewer to share in that friendship, if just for an hour or so.

So be on the look out for this one. It is showing in L.A. in the beginning of May this year!
