Making Ubuntu Talk
Okay, so far I have a somewhat working laptop with Ubuntu as the operating system. I say somewhat because I still can’t open certain attachments, videos or music clip. While I was very frustrated with this, Jonathan informed me it was normal and that I just had to install Flash player. What Jon and his geeky little minions have forgotten is that the average user – such as myself – are not used to having to install a million and 2 things just to get a working laptop! Its frustrating…’Just install Flash player’ really…how about “just make it work finally’
Anywho, I stomped my feet, snarled my lip and found the Flash player from Adobe and started the steps to a more media compatible laptop.
- download Flash player
- Unzip…oh so sorry untarred…it and rant the flash player –installer application
- restarted Firefox and was already to watch my videos…
- w-get http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/files/easyubuntu-3.021.tar.gz
- Note that there is no hypen between the ‘w’ and ‘get’, but Wordpress won’t let me publish a post with that command in it. Nice security!
- tar -zxf easyubuntu-3.021.tar.gz
- cd easyubuntu
- sudo python easyubuntu.in
Of course at this point Jon stepped in…I was distracted by shineys…He installed everything under the Multimedia tab, the web tab, and the fonts from the System tab Jon wants to add the following disclaimer (note that some of the codecs might be illegal in your jurisdiction so just because I did it doesn’t mean that you want to). Interesting…..
After all this, we discovered that Easy Ubuntu will install the Flash player so it was a waste of time for us to install it first. But that is why I am doing this and bloging it…so that others can learn from my many many mistakes….
Okay ‘Let there be sound’

Some annoyance when using sound in Linux is that Linux doesn’t have multi-sound support. Actually it has but not 100%. So for example, if you are on skype and want to launch a movie on youtube.com you wont be able to listen to the sound of the flash player. Basically Skype (or whatever you were listening) will kidnap the sound daemon and will keep it to itself.

‘Automatix’ is another very easy *auto-installer* for Ubuntu.
Don’t know what I would do without it.
In fact, yes I do know… TEAR MY BLOODY HAIR OUT!
Linux installations
(the hard way, the way the Linux Zealots like it!)
are a pain in the rear!
Incidentally, if you are using Ubu 6.06,
do your best to get Ubu 6.10 in there a.s.a.p.
I busted my tail with U6.06 for a week,
before upgrading to Ubu 6.10, where things work a lot better!
But getting back to Automatix..it’ll auto-download and auto-install Thunderbird emailer for you,
and SKYPE, as well as Google Earth.
It beats the stupid TERMINAL and Command Line …
