Live CD’s Come On Down….

Linuxlive.jpgYou know the old saying ‘I think your problem is that you put the horse in front of the wagon!’? Well, the wagon was my laptop and the fat lethargic uncooperative horse was a tag team of Ubuntu and Suse. I had decided that I would try Linux at full force! No live CD for me! I had a CD-ROM, it would be the good little boot disk it was supposed to be and I would be a fortified penguin princess. Nice in theory, not so nice in actuality.

I recorded my journey in the Linux diary while everyone around me told me to stop installing these distros on my hard drive, get away from the laptop, dual boot with windows, use the CD, get new hardware…but I refused to listen to them. Why? Well partly because I am a redhead Newfie ( translation: stubborn ass) but also because I wanted to record all of the problems that a newbie Linux user would encounter by trying this new operating system on their laptop. Hence, no substitutions or artificial flavours… That time has passed. The tears are gone. I have heard all of you loud and clear, I am going Live!

So I am taking all of your suggestions on which ones to try! No, I am not getting rid of my crappy Acer laptop, so don’t even approach hardware changes…not gonna happen! But I found a nifty little site called Extreme tech, and there are many helpful hints for newbies like myself, and a list of plausible distros I can try.

However, as a salute to my good friend Mandeep, Mepis is the first. I will download the live CD tonight. Stay tuned for the second chapter in the Linux diary!

I’m actually going to try out the Live Mepis CD as well. Since everyone seems to love it so much, let’s see how it fares on a couple of different laptops.

Great to hear this kelly, I just wonder where will ur work be allocated. I heard you will be doing autocad? Maybe a vmware solution might help u run linux forever and just have this programs only when you need it.

I still think that the wagon is broken by design, but I wish you the best of lucks anyway.

I’m praying to the computer gods that this goes well.
Please, Lords of Broadcom WiFi, let this work!

You guys are so funny. Jon find your own distro. JZA leave off my poor little laptop. Mandeep keep praying!
